Wild Wednesdays are for home-educated children aged around 10-12 who would like more focused and in depth wildlife and bushcraft studies. They run once a month, all year round. We are at The Nest, Wilmington, unless otherwise mentioned in the event details.
We have shelter, toilets and electricity at our bespoke farmland setting at The Nest, Wilmington. We also have a Treehouse and Lookout which are suitable for helping with experiments. We have four sessions planned out so far, but let Sarah know if there is anything in particular that you would like to cover.
It's £10 per child, payable in advance. An adult must accompany, but they are free of charge.
The sessions require 6 children booked to go ahead; the maximum number of children is 12.
The sessions run 1.15-3.00pm. Bring a drink and snack if you like.

What does a fire need? Experiments to examine different conditions, different fuels and different methods of lighting. Can you make fire by friction? Design a spreadsheet to record your findings. What happens if you add different substances to the fire? What is the best fire for boiling water? And for baking bread?
October 14th FANTASTIC FUNGI at Abbots Wood, Arlington
Explore the ancient wood in search of a wide variety of fungi. Know your Ascomycota from your Basidiomycota, and your saprotrophs from your biotrophs, finding examples of each. Learn how to group them in families. Can you find a parasitic fungus? Where do they fit in the tree of life?
November 11th GREEN WOODWORKING
Green wood is wood that has recently been cut - we will discover how it differs from seasoned wood. We will try splitting, cleaving and peeling
using hand tools and learn to make some stools for The Nest. We will examine the effect of green wood on a fire, and make a green wood skewers to cook a treat on the fire.
December 9th WINTER WAYS
Learn to tell your winter trees apart by looking at the twigs, buds and bark. What other clues are there? What signs are there of animals using The Nest and fields in the winter? Why do we celebrate with holly and ivy in the winter? What to look out for in the winter skies and working with ice and fire.
